Toronto police say an 11-year-old boy has died after falling through a skylight above a high school gym Friday afternoon.

Insp. Paul Rinkoff told reporters emergency crews were called to Victoria Park Collegiate Institute, located on Wallingford Road near Victoria Park Avenue and York Mills Road, at around 5:20 p.m.

He said five youths scaled the southeast side of the school and made up on to the roof of the gym. As they were on the roof, Rinkoff said the boy fell approximately 30 feet to the ground below.

“The youth that were present at the time approached the staff who called 911,” he said.

A TDSB spokesperson said it was mostly caretaking staff in the building at the time.

“This appears to be very tragic and unfortunate,” he said.

“Our prayers go out to the family and friends of this youth.”

Rinkoff said some of those on the roof have been interviewed and the remaining youths will be interviewed Friday evening.

He encouraged anyone in the area who may have seen youths at the property around the time of the incident was asked to call police.
