Highway 40 eastbound has reopened to traffic in Montreal’s West Island after it was closed for several hours Friday morning near the Morgan exit.
At around 5 a.m., a maintenance vehicle slammed into the structure over the highway and severely damaged the sign that hangs above the road.
Gilles Payer, spokesperson for Quebec’s Transport Ministry, said the structure was deemed unsafe to use, which then forced the closure during the morning rush hour.

The Sûreté du Québec said the heavy truck’s equipment clipped and broke several of the steel beams on the sign.

Work crews had to dismantle the crumbling sign in the hours that followed.
The closure prompted significant traffic headaches for off-island drivers who were diverted to Highway 20.
The operation took several hours but the ministry confirmed the work was complete a little after 9 a.m. on social media.
