EDMONTON- Edmonton motorists can look forward to some relief on the roads following the Labour Day long weekend, as four major construction projects are nearing completion.
One of the major headaches for drivers this summer has been work on Stony Plain Road over Groat Road. The City of Edmonton says three of the road’s four lanes, and the bridge’s south sidewalk, will reopen by Monday, September 2.
“We’re pleased to be able to get the Stony Plain Road over Groat Road Bridge open as it’s one of the main routes from the west end to downtown,” said Allan Bartman, general supervisor for Roads Design and Construction with the City. “Although crews will still be finishing construction, one of our goals as a road authority is to get traffic moving as soon as possible, especially after a long weekend.”

The City hopes to have all four lanes open to traffic by mid-September.
Three other construction projects will also be wrapping up within the next week.
On Sunday, September 1, 17th Street, north of 23rd Avenue, will reopen to traffic. Work along the southeast Edmonton street began in 2011 and included upgrades to the road, curbs and gutters, as well as the addition of turn bays.
Beginning Friday morning, traffic will once again be running in both directions on 118th Avenue, between 103rd and 106th Streets. The City says there is still minor work to be done on the streetscape project, but it will not impact traffic.
A portion of 108 Street, from south of 100th Avenue to 103rd Avenue, is already open to traffic. The portion of 108th Street from 103rd Avenue to 104th Avenue will reopen the first week of September. While 99th Avenue remains closed, the City anticipates it will be completed by the end of the 2013 construction season, which is early November.
