On Sunday afternoon, Peel Regional Police announced Ritchie had been arrested and charged. He appeared in court on the same day.

In an update Wednesday, officers described Ritchie as the victim’s “ex-partner” and said he had “actively evaded police.”

He was found through a collaboration involving Peel Regional Police and Hamilton Police Services. He has been charged with first degree murder, police said.

“I am grateful for the work of our investigators and the collaboration with policing partners that led to the quick arrest of Linval Ritchie,” Chief Nishan Duraiappah said in a statement.

Ritchie had an “extensive criminal history, including violence and a five-year weapons prohibition,” police said.
