Zookeeper injured by gorilla at Calgary Zoo

CALGARY – The Calgary Zoo says one of their zoo keepers was injured in an incident on Friday morning.

Occupational Health and Safety confirms that an experienced zookeeper was working outside of the gorillas’ holding cell, when her right hand was bitten by a gorilla. She was taken to Foothills Hospital to be treated.

It happened during the keeper’s normal morning routine with the gorillas, while the animals were inside the enclosure.

“No animal was out of their enclosure, the keeper was not in an enclosure…they do come into close proximity with the animals they work with,” explains Laurie Skene from the Calgary Zoo.

She adds that they will be reviewing their protocols following the incident.

“In all instances, whether it’s the keeper, whether it’s an electrician or grounds person, management takes it very seriously when anybody gets hurt.”

The public was not affected by the latest incident.
