REGINA – Ron Atchison – described by the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ CEO and president Jim Hopson as one of their “greatest defensive lineman ever” – has died at age 80.
Atchison joined the Roughriders in 1952 and played 237 games before he retired in 1968. He was named a CFL West all-star six times.
He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1978 and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. He was also one of the inaugural members of the Roughriders Plaza of Honour in 2987.
Atchison was born in Central Butte and raised in Saskatoon. He played for the Saskatoon Junior Hilltops from 1947 and 1949. That team named its practice field and permanent quarters for him.
