Protesters rally against jet fuel facility at YVR

Critics of a planned jet fuel facility at YVR are calling on the province to block the project they say carries too much risk.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington and city mayor Malcolm Brodie joined 20 protesters today in Steveston to make a final plea to the government.

The environment minister is expected to make a decision on the project before the end of the year.

If it gets the green light, a jet fuel terminal and pipeline would be built near the airport and through Richmond.

Huntington says an accident at the site could be catastrophic for the Fraser estuary.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie says he and his council have been vocal in their opposition.

“Despite a lengthy process, little has changed. More viable options have not been fully considered, if they had been considered at all.”

Brodie says while the city understands the need for a reliable source of jet fuel, the environmental and public safety risks remain unaddressed.
