SASKATOON – Lights, camera, action. The 30th anniversary of the Festival of Trees opened Sunday. This year’s theme: Christmas on the Silver Screen.
“Our trees, gingerbread houses, our special events are themed after movies that you love to watch at Christmas time and holiday movies,” Festival of Trees CEO Cheyenne Steffen said.
Each of the 47 trees is decorated with complex detail. Organizers say there are about 100 lights per foot of tree.
“We have a designer night every fall and so we have someone come in and do some samples and teach them a little bit about decorating trees,” Steffen explained.

Funds raised from the festival will support the “Equip for Excellence” campaign at the Saskatoon City Hospital. The money will go directly to purchasing equipment, resources and technology.

The nine days of special events kicked off with a Sunday morning Santa Claus breakfast.
“Santa’s Breakfast was a huge success again this year. We sold out our tickets within the first full day of ticket sales and served breakfast to over 300 people this morning,” said Breakfast co-chair Heather Nakaska.
Santa came all the way from the North Pole to individually meet with the boys and girls. He stayed until everyone had told him what they would like for Christmas.
“They’ve been absolutely wonderful and I appreciate their patience because some of them wait in line for over an hour to see me,” Santa said.
After Santa was done meeting with the children he took the time to share the secret of how to stay of his ‘nice list’, “Make sure that you treat everybody very nice. Not only this holiday season, but through the entire year. Make sure you do things for mom and dad and for your friends. Treat everyone the way you’d like to be treated and have a Merry Christmas.”
