Watch the video above: Saskatchewan town works together to build community rink
WALDHEIM, Sask. – Volunteers in a Saskatchewan town have come together to build an outdoor community rink for local skaters.
The first skating day was on Dec. 10 in Waldheim, Sask. and it wouldn’t have happened without the volunteers and the use of the town’s equipment.
It took half-a-day to get the rink up and running and Waldheim Valley Regional Park assistant chair Greg Wiens puts in another four to six hours every week to keep it in shipshape for winter recreationists.

The outdoor rink not only complements the indoor one at the Waldheim Recreation Centre but it enhances hockey in the community.
“As our community has grown, there has barely been any time for kid’s practices except for really early in the morning or late at night,” Weins said.
“This has been great; it allows practices at regular times, whether it’s after school or 9 to 10 o’clock in the morning, on Saturdays and its open all the time.”
The pond was build 50 years ago and hadn’t been used for the past 20 to 25 years.
So Wiens decided to bring the outdoor rink back to life.
The rink only takes up half the pond and ideas are in the works to add a speed skating track next year.
