Eligible Canadians will find a bit more cash in their bank accounts starting today as quarterly payments begin for the federal Liberals’ boosted affordability benefit.
The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is paid out to lower-income households every three months and was previously called the GST/HST credit.

Eligible households got a one-time payment worth 50 per cent of the benefit’s annual value in early June.
The quarterly payments are also getting a 25 per cent boost for the next five years.

Annual amounts can range between a few hundred dollars to more than a thousand dollars per family, depending on marital status and the number of children in the household.
Prime Minister Mark Carney pitched the affordability measure in January as a way to help Canadians cope with economic uncertainty and the rising costs of essentials.
Global trying to make it sound like a huge benefit. And something new. It is the old GST rebate. Because the government is taxing us way too much. The Romans sacked their rulers when taxes climbed to over 10%. HST is over that all by itself… Food for thought.
It is a 25% increase, so it works out to just over $100, or not even enough to fill the tank to get the groceries. Putting it in the right perspective. Better than nothing but certainly not an ‘Oh Wow!” event.
It’s great that lower income people receive this benefit. Although I don’t receive it I’m happy this country takes care of the less fortunate.
Not much between those ears of yours !
Hey jeff
Ben Dover…
If you’re happy, then they’re happy!
Dufus!! LOL!!!
What a SICK JOKE by Carney!!
My husband and I received 3/4 of the amount allowed!!
I’m happy that the only people who qualify for these payments are hiding there real income by working for cash or not declaring their tips or non taxed income.
I always wanted to pay 48% tax out of my hard earned income to keep freeloaders to the Liberal standard they have become accustomed too.
Really starting to feel like everyone else in this country gets some relief, and im stuck footing the bill while drowning.
Sucks to be canadian
Oh boy, the 30% of Canadians that actually get these cheques will be so happy. The other 70% continue to get nothing from the government.
Tell us how much taxpayers are paying for this Liberal vote paying scheme!
How will they get these tax dollars to the only qualified people that they lost track of?
I DO NOT WANT TO PAYER HIGHER TAXES FOR THESE LIBERAL PARTY VOTE-GETTING “FREEBIES”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To the person who claims they earn 20000 and don’t receive the benefit. That’s odd, I just entered that data on the government website and one would receive over 1200 a year as a single person.
As a Disabled Canadian who struggles to afford basic needs, I was surprised to learn this is income geared and I receive less than the maximum amount even with an annual income under $20,000. I qualified for the maximum amount of GST, but apparently you will get a higher amount the more you make up to the amount where they start scaling back again. More over, this isn’t being made pubic.
I want every Canadian to be like me and just !!!
Your welcome.
It’s hilarious how the conservative supporters can’t come up with a cogent argument, and instead personally attack other commenters. It’s the typical immature Trump/Poilievre SOP. Cracks me up. BTW Go Carney!
Any rednecks here that don’t want theirs can donate it to charity.
Of course rednecks don’t give to charities though.
Fortunately, I don’t need this benefit because I’m hitting it big time as a Liberal shill. I get paid a dime per post and when combined with the other government benefits I receive I usually have enough money left over for a night of entertainment involving a bottle of cheap liquor and my favorite Ladyboy.
So again Carney has done nothing. He takes a program and renames it and all his supporters are cheering!
Ben is still believing it’s all rainbows and gummy bears.
Pretty sure the only people that’ll receive this are the unvetted & misplaced friends of the LPC.
Unfortunately every check is added to the national debt, wake up people.
This does help temporarily but our taxes will continue to rise to pay for all the $ they are giving out. As Canadians we pay high prices for property tax, cell phone plans, wifi, groceries, gas for homes, gas for cars etc. If the Canadian government would make abortion and euthanasia illegal, all that money they put toward that could be put back into our Canadian society which would benefit us all.
@wendy because all liberals are just trained seals. Will do anything for the trainer and piece of fish.
So the Federal Government renames the previously called GST/HST credit as a grocery benefit and Liberals applaud like trained seals. 🙄
Bribing Canadians with their own money
Hi my nickname is Scarecrow I think you can figure out why !!!
As someone who doesn’t benefit from this, I’m glad it’s going to lower income Canadians. We all should try being less selfish and put ourselves in their shoes instead of whining about not receiving the benefit and complaining about taxes. It’s the “me me me” conservative ideology which is nauseating.
Didn’t Chanmpage promise lower grocery prices by Thanksgiving 2023?
Idiot government steals money from
my part time minimum wage job that does not pay enough to feed, house and cloth myself. I work at a grocery store while being hungry and this idiot government thinks i’ll like them for returning a small portion of what they stole.. idiots and fools!
Carny doing nothing once again! Biiiiig talk and no action Liberals. Let’s waste some more money and talk about doing stuff but actually do nothing. When are we going to get rid of these lefty lunatics?
So all carney did was replace an existing program by renaming it to look like something new. In other words, carney has done nothing (again) and claimed credit for doing something (again).
75% of Canadians will get nothing why not report that instead glorifying something that benefits so few yet is subsidized by the majority of Canadians.
Awesome, I can’t wait to receive ZERO dollars and contribute THOUSANDS!
