U.S. Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney proposed legislature Monday which she says would “hold Canada accountable” for “unfair” provincial limits on importing American alcohol — which were made in response to the trade war and tariffs launched against Canada last year.
The Combating Attacks on our National Alcoholic Drinks by Allies (CANADA) Act states that under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act, the legislation would direct U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and his office to investigate Canadian provincial liquor board restrictions on the import and distribution of U.S. products within 30 days, if made law.
“Nearly all of Canada’s provincial liquor boards have prohibited or restricted the importation and distribution of American alcoholic beverages, harming U.S. producers and limiting their access to an important export market,” a press release reads.
“The CANADA Act builds on comments from U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, who stated that resolving the Canadian provinces’ discriminatory treatment of American alcohol producers would likely require an enforcement action.”
The legislature comes as eight Canadian provincial governments levied restrictions on U.S. alcohol imports following U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs last year.
“Canadian provinces cannot be allowed to hold American wineries, breweries, and distilleries hostage and attempt to ransom them,” Tenney, a Republican member of the House of Representatives whose district includes parts of northern New York, said Monday in a statement on her website.

“American wineries, breweries, distilleries, and other beverage producers deserve fair access to Canadian markets, not discriminatory treatment from one of our closest trading partners.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on April 23 that provincial bans on American alcohol are a “trade irritant.”
“These are provincial actions, with respect to alcohol on the shelves,” he said.
On March 4, 2025, in response to the first round of tariffs levied by U.S. President Donald Trump, American alcohol was officially removed from the shelves of Ontario liquor stores.
Ontario imported roughly $965 million worth of booze from America before the ban. That meant that roughly $2 million worth of U.S. products have either expired or would expire in the next few months.
Most of those products, according to the government, were beer, ready-to-drink beverages and wine.

New Brunswick’s premier Susan Holt said April 28 that she’s willing to put American alcohol back in stores if the United States reverses course on significant tariffs and duties.
“We want a free and open trade relationship with the U.S. Steel tariffs, the softwood lumber tariffs, those are hurting our economy and our businesses in New Brunswick, so we’re using the leverage that we have as Canadian consumers.”
In addition, an October 2025 report from the Distilled Spirits Council, a U.S. distillers trade group, states that American booze exports to Canada are down a staggering 85 per cent in the second quarter compared to the year before, falling below US$10 million.
I buy Kentucky bourbon, but no wine (California) – which is a personal choice… fortunately, in Alberta, some freedoms still exist.

I hope the USA boycotts Canada 100%. Canada decided to go Elbows Up and badmouth the USA so they should be punished.”
you can’t 100% boycott us cause your useless without Canada’s oil and energy, suck it up fruitcake-we ARE punishing you morons
Just read some of the comments and I believe there to be a lot of misinformed individuals on this platform. I believe before commenting and this includes myself, a bit of education and research needs to be had. For instance, many of us voters contacted our MLAs to ask our provincial representatives to boycott US alcohol so it was not necessarily our provincial governments acting on their own. Secondly, Canada does in fact purchase dairy, eggs, poultry, etc from the USA it’s part of the CUSMA deal negotiated by Trump in his first term. Education is key when commenting in these forums and Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are not the places to find this. You can go to the Government of Canada sites to find real documented information. The comments about our Flag and Elbows up; Pride in our Nation is an honourable thing unfortunately sometimes it is used for the wrong reasons. But I understand that people were scared and sometimes when we are scared we get angry. Again, Education is key. We have a lot of very well educated people in this country, a lot of very good people in this country and No matter where in the world you live we all want the same things.
I strongly agree to “Elbows Up” when it comes to restricting any US products, alcohol included for as long as possible. Trump said Canada has Nothing he/USA needs so why are they so desperate to put forward this bill. In actual fact, Canada has So Much to offer that the US actually NEEDS us as a partner. To Hell with them that think we can be bullied and NO WAY on earth will we true Canadians ever become the property or door mat to the USA. We ARE CANADA, STRONG and FREE! And to those separatists in Alberta and Quebec – Move! A lot of you from Alberta are from American heritage – leave – Us true Canadians don’t want you here. We are proud of our Country, of our way, of our people, of our lands. We are diverse, we are strong, we are proud and we are a living part of this beautiful, generous, not perfect, humble land, The Great White North!
It makes no difference even if the booze is on the shelf. Canadians will NOT buy it. Just like every product from the USA. Trump does not dictate what Canadians buy or stock on their shelves. Maybe you should have kept your mouth shut with the 51st state. Canadians are DONE with the USA. So do us all a favor and piss of eh.
I am not a fan of the government doing this, if Canadians want to boycott something it should come from them, not a politician who quite franky has lost touch with what people want.
Canada is not required to purchase anything from the US. Canada needs to decouple completely from the US.
No American alcohol!
Fine let them in, just create an Undemocratic System of Assholes act, or USA act for short where we tax imported liquor and tobacco at 10000% for unregulated and unmitigated health hazards. Namely, they hurt my head with their hypocrisy and double talk.
Great to see how much its hurting the Americans. Thanks for letting us know!
I think the U S machine should look at the population of the U S compared to Canada.
That little old Canada could inflict any economic injury to the U S is more than a joke!
That goes for lumber, etc
Nova Scotia was stupid enough to take American liquor off the shelves, then later sell it and give all the money to their favorite friends.
And how should we punish her state for Trump’s illegal tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, copper and cars? Perhaps an export tax on Ontario electricity going to her state of New York. The Ugly Americans want everything their way.
What would be the point of this. They cannot “make” people buy American alcohol and if people aren’t buying, that affects how liquor stores will buy. Why would they get something that doesn’t sell? I have found non-American brands that I quite like just as much if not more than American brands that I will keep getting.
Like they can force us to buy their booze ? Considering DT started it. They can lift their tarrifs off steel & lumber and then we see what each province does. But I personally will NEVER touch American alocohol again .
I’m a donkey. Don’t listen to my garbage. I just ramble on like a clown.
Why would anyone want their piss to begin with
Does this mean non Americans can now legally interfere to push individual states on how to think and how to operate?
But President Trump has said many times that the USA does not need Canada so Canadians are merely accommodating him.
Booze doesn’t expire!! The news is getting worse every day on untrue statements.
Belgium 4 crooked trump 1
Iran 4 crooked trump 0
@truth:
Typical.
You call others “stooge” but your grammar is grade three.
“get screwed” lol…
Ben you stooge usa has been get screwed on tariffs for decades. Forget what the propaganda media tells you and look into it for yourself
Here’s an unconventional idea. Let companies decide who they buy their steel and aluminum from. It’s called competition. That means no tariffs. Unfortunately the US doesn’t believe in free market competition
Perhaps getting rid of Trump would open up the doors to fair trading between our countries.
First off, why punish the Canadian provinces because according to your President Trump there is nothing Canada has that the US needs. 🤔 guess he was wrong they need the Canadian market!! If not then why is this such a big deal. 2ndly I think just put the booze back on the shelves – Canadians are doing a great job of boycotting American products on their own. I agree with the comments on here let us make the choice if we want to buy it or not. After all the consumers are the market NOT the politicians 🤷♀️
Here’s a novel idea…
Let people decide….I don’t need media and government trying to make the choice for me.
Hear that Progressives? I decide, not you.
It’s amazing how Representative Tenney completely leaves out the part where her own President sparked this mess with heavy tariffs on Canadian steel and lumber. You don’t get to slap tariffs on your closest ally, threaten to make us the ’51st state,’ and then cry foul when we choose not to stock your bourbon. Actions have reactions—welcome to the free market.
Funny how conservatives hate the actual free market.
Dee Ironside – spot on comment
I love it when yanks feel they have been treated so unfairly and throw their toys out the pram
I love it when the Yanks throw their toys out the pram because life is so unfair
Who needs American liquor when there is so much Liberal Kool Aid to swill.
Personally, I love to guzzle the struff as you can see by my repetitively delusional comments
Time for Canadians to put down the bottle, sober up and quit voting Liberal.
Since when does a bottle of whiskey ever expire? Sounds like alarmist journalism.
Just let it come into Canada. If no one buys it then I am sure the stores will stop ordering it.
Get the same effect without playing the progressive socialist game of telling people what they can and can not do
Tenny seems to think that provincial governments are the main reason Canadians are not buying US wine and spirits. In AB their products are on the shelf but we are not buying them, nor are we buying their products in our grocery stores. Nor are we travelling to the US. Europe and SA make great wines; Mexico produces great fruit and vegetable and vacation spots. Trumps 51st state insults opened Canada’s eyes to much better alternatives. We will probably not buy all those F-35’s but opt for a European fighter jet instead. The list goes on and on of better alternatives.
I hope our provinces keep up the good work. Keep those restrictions until our spoiled neighbors learn to play nice. Canada should hoard it’s potash too since Trumpty Dumpty said they don’t need anything from us. Go kick rocks America!
@Tex:
I doubt they are as stupid as you even in Texas where most kids flunk out.
You are so dumb you don’t know that trump started all this?
Wow.
I guess you think some camels started the Iran war. Nope. But they finished it. trump couldn’t even beat them and now has to pay billions?
I hope the USA boycotts Canada 100%. Canada decided to go Elbows Up and badmouth the USA so they should be punished.
Go for it. No one cares anymore. All the Bourbon distillers are filing for bankruptcy thanks to Trump.
Canadian pls stop visiting New York State, and let’s send a message to U.S. Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney that we don’t care what you will do. We are Canadians and will survive without you Americans
@anonymous
Lol…gaining in popularity?, oh right your polls…..smh
you do know that Coors and Molson are now the same company right?
Why does anyone touch that coors rat pee anyway?
@T : You don;’t speak for Alberta where Carney is gaining in popularity so phuck off goof.
Can’t even do simple arithmetic. They have ten times the population than us so an equal trade would mean we buy ten times more commodities from USA than they buy from us. Response from USA? “What’s arithmetic?. Cut off the potash. Fafo .
Claudia Tenney is delusional. “…(We) deserve fair access to Canadian markets, not discriminatory treatment from one of our closest trading partners.” That’s what her president has done to Canadians since he took office!!
Lol…you would jeopardize future trade because of one man for two years?
Break ties because of one man?
Fight for your independence?
Good, now you know how Alberta feels about Carney.
Put it back and tarriff it 100%
They started this fight…
I wont touch ANY booze from the US ever again! Period. There’s plenty of options made right here in Canada 🇨🇦. The US has nothing I need and quite frankly, irritated AF when I see their cars here
The US wants to promote trade for alcohol yet won’t open a bridge (Gordie Howe) that Canada initiated and paid for in full that would facilitate all cross border traffic, transport, and trade including that of alcohol. Does it get any more stupid?
Notice how any counter measure to American aggression is framed as “terror” ??? The only hostage is Tenney’s brain, which is trapped by total ignorance and stupidity
Not quite true… about 40% of Canadian distilled spirits are exported and to your point most of that is to the US. If the US was to ban Canadian spirit imports it would not be good for our industry but Canada has no ban on US alcohol.
Those poor souls in the USA are suffering. Zero sympathy for them. You broke a trade agreement and imposed illegal tariffs.
She doesn’t even say why we are boycotting their liquor. Typical MAGA. I’m sure the MAGA traitors here are cheering this because it wants to hurt Canadians. Kick out the MAGA traitors.
Lovin all you flag waving “Canadians”…
Not too long ago, flying a Canadian flag was a sign of rebellious ne’r do well behaviour….
Now you same elbozos are rallying behind Carney?? Flying your flags… Lmao 🤣
But they don’t need anything from Canada. We have been told that from several represtatives, over the last year and a half… Now, we’re an important export market. You have to make up your mind!!!
The vast majority of Canadian spirits are shipped aborad, and of that amount, some 90% goes to the U.S. They could could destroy us by doing the same thing and not shelving our product.
We do let US eggs and dairy imports into Canada. Yes there are health standards that need to be met but they are allowed to import it if it meets those standards. As for dairy, one of the criteria is no hormones but most of American dairy is hormone free as many states have that requirement themselves. Egg imports were banned for a period during the avian flu outbreak that devastated the egg producers in the US, which is why you saw egg selling for $9 or $10 USD per dozen a couple years ago.
To Randall, your comment displays your ignorance on this subject.
“Canada doesn’t let US dairy into Canada, doesn’t let US eggs into Canada”
So true because US eggs are NOT refrigerated and have a history of ‘going bad’, US dairy allows unnecessary hormones and antibiotics to be used to facilitate growth. In plain language, the quality is substandard and does not meet safety requirements. If you prefer substandard food then buy American and take your chances.
You comment on this board is probably the most uninformed one of all. Do some research on all three of the products you say are not allowed into Canada (dairy, eggs, booze) and see what you find.
Single source markets have left us economic hostages. If the US is upset we’re not buying any specific product like bourbon , they’re suffering the same consequences. We all became too complacent in establishing multinational markets for our manufactured goods and our energy products. I believe the best thing that could have happened to our beautiful country was this wake-up call.
Now I vote Tory 90% of the time (I actually liked Stephen Harper), and I will campaign for Carney in the next election. Don’t let your traditional party vote keep you back – some people complain and some execute.
Another dumb American who thinks they can threaten us with idle threats. Soon these senators should have to show proof they have at least a GED before being allowed to talk just to hear themselves talk foolishness.
Good keep it banned. Blame your orange head President
I bet a lot of Democrats will vote for this bill.
Canada doesn’t let US dairy into Canada, doesn’t let US eggs into Canada, now booze. We are lucky Trump is such a nice guy. Other leaders would just close the US/Canada border.
As an example: Nigeria closed its land borders with neighbors like Benin, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad over trade disputes.
Don’t cave to these maga cement heads. Stay the course by Canadian.
Hey DSA (that’s the Divided States of America), when you stop doing the same to our steel and lumber producers, we’ll be happy to restock the liquor shelves.
Plain and simple, we are not your friends any more, you have made that opinion loudly & very clear to us…you don’t want our products, we don’t want yours.
So the provinces that currently do not shelf American booze decide to put it back… and then charge $200 per bottle. See if that helps. And since these provinces set the cost of alcohol in their gvmt. stores what can the US do/say about it.
Perhaps the Republicans should reflect on why those “bans” came about in thr first place.
As they should!
Trump caused this and his administration should stay out of Canada’s business.
They want their booze to go back on the shelves, they only have to be adults instead of infants.. stop your crying; you want it on the shelves, take you f??/k illegal tariffs off PERIOD
Understandable. Why provinces used their monopoly power in this situation demonstrates the absence of real ‘free trade’. The Americans are surely entitled to retaliation
Obviously taking US booze off the shelves is working otherwise there wouldn’t be so much crying about it. Let congress investigate and pass legislation to sanction the Canadian provinces that have taken this action. What is that going to accomplish for the US booze industry? Nothing. Maybe you can convince the orange turd to launch some cruises missiles at some LCBO’s. Just make sure it’s not a Tuesday.
Cry baby 😢… they Just don’t get it(“americans”)…We are CANADIANS and we are Proud!
I used to enjoy Mark and Bullet bourbon and Apothic red wine…
Now I stick to my Single Malts and Canadian Wines…my Choice as a Canadian!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Shame on Alberta and Saskatchewan. Big Time shame!
So it’s ok for the trump administration to be discriminate Canada products yet when we do it to the US they don’t like it, so if you want booze back on Canadian shelves change your tariffs on Canadian products entering the USA that’s called fair trading – we will not be bullied!
Yes Yes Yes….Trump bad…
So what happens in a couple of years? You know when he’s gone? Will you weanies continue? This is a blip in time….
America has been our biggest, most Stable, trading partner for generations…..yup that’s right….just wait it out…..in the meantime try and focus on your OWN government and their policies…..stop being fooled.
You first, Claudia. Hold your felon accountable and let’s move forward. Out of curiosity though, how are you enjoying the subsidized energy there in New York?
When you look up the word “moron” in the dictionary, you see a picture of Claudia Tenney…and also Pete Hoekstra.
Let’s boycott as much as possible as consumers. We should make buying American alcohol equated to a perverse action of the worst kind.
As soon as Orange Julius removes his tariffs and opens the Gordie, the booze can flow northward once again. Until then, worry about your own homegrown disasters.
At this point I don’t even care what threats the fascist banana republic to the south makes. America is not our ally anymore. The relationship isn’t even transactional; all they want to do is take. America is untrustworthy, unreliable, and insatiably greedy.
Carney should resign ASAP.
Don’t no why provinces are storing the American booze why not sell it and do not order anymore ! Save on storing and get investment back on purchase !! Taxpayers are paying to store the booze and the original cost of buying the booze !!
The bans are f *ucking stupid like the politicians that put them in place. Let Canadians decide.
Why wouldn’t they act as petulantly as we are when this is the best strategy our governments have?
US – We are gonna put tariffs on Canada because we love tariffs!
Liberals – tariffs are archaic trade tools that only lead to inflation and thats why we will now impose tariffs too, in retaliation. Take that!
Also Liberals – that’s it! We will remove your liquor from our stores because you have put tariffs on us even though we did the same in retaliation already!
US – Well, we may retaliate for that if this legislation passes.
Liberals – this is crazy, we need to search farther abroad for trade to spite the US even though doing so means we are increasing carbon emmissions and trade insecurity in doing so!
Another perfect example of American ignorance. Actions have reactions and I hope we never carry those brands again. It has been great for Canadian brands and proves the bullies won’t win. No red card reversal here.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
what a bunch of friggin’ babies. When will that orange clown realize all of this is BECAUSE OF HIM???
S0 it’s not right for us to hold their booze industry hostage but it’s ok for them to keep the Gordie Howe Bridge opening hostage? A bridge we paid billions for they say doesn’t benefit United States because the Ambassador Bridge is 100% American owned. Rather, it is a bridge owned by one billionaire family, that coincidentally donates millions to guess who and ONLY benefits that family, NOT United States. The new bridge, once tolls have been recouped for Canada’s investment, will benefit all of the U.S. in perpetuity because the tolls will then be split to benefit BOTH countries equally and ownership shared by both countries. Note also, that American workers and steel were used on the U.S. portion of this amazing bridge and the benefits to trade will be enormous for BOTH countries.
America already stated they don’t need anything from Canada. So why do we need to buy their booze we have more then enough of our own wonderful distilleries, wineries, breweries. Let’s all be honest no one in Canada who enjoys alcohol is buying American anyway thats the cheap stuff teens drink
We will continue punishing you until you remove sectoriel tariffs.
US potential action is just rediculous
and has no legal basis. Canada can do whatever it wants in its own borders
They can put it back on the LCBO shelves but they can’t make us buy it.
Lynnda…. Exactly let people decide if they want to buy or not.
So they put US alcohol back on the shelves. We can choose not to buy it.
What goes around comes around…
The Trump idiot MAGA dumb are mad because Canada reacted when Trump put stupid tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, auto parts etc. and then are surprised when Canadians react, How stupid are these clowns??
Dave is spot on!
Hey Reggie,
Cope you Elbozo
Hey Miki,
Cry harder.
Americans need to look to who who is running their country. A felon with no regard for fairness or truth.
Even if American alcoholic drinks are allowed. We will never purchase them or set foot in your country again.
This is odd. When the bottoms up crowd first announced this ban, this same U.S crew said Canadian purchases were 5% of their export sales and weren’t concerned in the least. While I live in a province that doesn’t have this ban, I just don’t have a taste for their products.
Remove the tariffs & maybe Canada will buy US products?? Better still: Remove Trump!
@Dave:
Drink your own gut rot.
Your beer is water.
And your prez gave you this tariff horzezhit.
Tariffs are just taxes on you.
they may be able to pressure the provincial governments but they can’t pressure the canadian consumer, reject the american booze
And again, whether it’s Americans or Canadians, we are all suffering because of our own “elected officials” policies….
Then, look at other Western countries and you start to see that this is being done on purpose.
Maintain the bans until the U.S. starts acting responsibly again, if that ever happens. To do any less is unpatriotic!
The bans are pathetically childish and violate the law
