German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said on Tuesday that Canada’s decision to select Germany’s TKMS to build up to 12 submarines for its navy was good news for Germany’s economy and collective security within NATO.
“With this news, we will be sending a strong signal in support of transatlantic and European cooperation at the start of the summit,” Merz said in Berlin, referring to a NATO summit in Ankara starting on Tuesday.
“For this is truly a strategic initiative that will bind Canada, Germany and Norway together as partners in the North Atlantic region for decades to come,” he added.
TKMS, majority-owned by German conglomerate Thyssenkrup, beat out a competing offer from South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean.
“This is a signal for this location as a whole, for Made in Germany: that we prevailed in a tough international competition of this scale speaks for our engineering skill, for our manufacturing expertise, for the know-how, and for what can be done at the sites here,” Klingbeil said.

He added that the agreement goes far beyond the economic deal and it also has geopolitical implications.
“At a time when the world is reorganizing itself, having Canada and Norway at our side, and strengthening these alliances even further, is something very important,” Klingbeil said.
money for germany more money for uke. so the plan is to bankrupt canada? god we need to leave this mess
Leave our cpp investments alone carnhole
I am almost crying, right now… Thank you, Mark Carney..! <3
Amusing and bemusing how people who are older in age only insult and don’t debate when they disagree. In any case, the first jobs to be created will be the port infrastructure required to accommodate the subs. As the subs arrive, maintenance and servicing jobs come into play. Engineers, welders, etc. will be required.
I heard Ben took a little yellow school bus as a kid.
What is Carney getting back as payola?
If Carney picked SK Ben would have applauded that also.
@Ben how does Germany making submarines for us create jobs.. like how brainwashed are you.
In case you haven’t been deep diving European news the German economy is tanking due to rising costs of energy. Germany is going broke fast. We will never see these subs and it will cost us dearly. Not to mention this scam is to provide our hard earned cash in order to support Germany
Good luck

A win win for Canada and Germany. This deal will create over 100,000 jobs in Canada. Can’t find fault with that.
Of course it’s good for the German economy. Why would we do anything good for our economy? We only have the largest coast line in the world. Governments should be coming to Canada to have ships built but instead, they go elsewhere. Besides, this is never going to happen. Carney keeps flapping his mouth and nothing happens. Same old liberal nothing. It’s embarrassing.
Lmfao
Of course he did
Good ,as much as I would prefer to see the Subs built in Canada by Canadians, that would never happen under this fumbling Liberal Government and besides that the Koreans can’t even build a decent car
Gee, ya think?
I am so glad this deal is going to be good for the German economy but what is it going to do for Canada’s economy. What is Germany going to buy from Canada to help our economy the answer nothing because we have nothing they want and even if they did want our oil or gas Canada isn’t capable of supplying it because we don’t have the infrastructure in place to deliver. Canada will never be self reliant and support itself we have to many self interest groups to block getting anything done. Canada will always rely on others to produce what they refuse to produce for themselves. Canadians can expect prices to keep going up
And that is now a Mark Carney signature. His deals are better for the foreign trade partners than they are for Canada.
