Prime Minister Mark Carney has named his principal secretary Tom Pitfield to the Senate and says he is dropping the non-partisan criteria for appointments to the upper chamber.
Pitfield is one of four new appointments to the Senate announced today, the first Carney has made since he took office more than a year ago.
Conservative MP Richard Martel is also on the list, who along with Pitfield will represent Quebec.
Pitfield is a longtime Liberal strategist who has served as Carney’s principal secretary since he became prime minister in March 2025.
Martel was first elected in 2018 and has served in several opposition leadership roles including Quebec lieutenant under Conservative leader Erin O’Toole.
New Brunswick cancer researcher Dr. Rodney Ouellette and Manitoba chartered professional accountant Geeta Tucker round out Carney’s first round of Senate appointments.
Anonymous, you’re a weak little piece of petulant garbage the world needs to eradicate.
While he does away with another fake liberal policy
Trump-stein runs Canada.
Garbage violent men are destroying societies everywhere.
It’s encouraging to see that Carney appointed a Conservative MP to the senate who was closely aligned with Poilievre and supported his policies. It’s a non-partisan appointment that suggests Carney is making an effort to reach across party lines.
Oh come on, this is not a Con MP. This is a Liberal through and through. Only a shallow minded hunk of garbage Liberal would cross over and then suck his way to senate.
To repeat to those who don’t know, senators, by convention, do not represent regions or Provinces. That doesn’t preclude the fact that each region must have a certain number of senators.
Axe the tax, jail not bail, get a real job, say peer poli while nibbling his apple.
Hey cons, if this is the best you have then you need to give up finger pointing.
@Ben
Well Ben once again you embarrass yourself
with you endless incorrect and just plain stupid comments.
Yes pal , there ARE regional requirements for senate appointments. Can you even tie your shoes alone? I bet you wear slip ons!
Go ahead man make another statement and I will shoot it full of holes.
I dare ya.
As others have pointed out, Carney appointing a conservative to the senate is a sign that he’s not afraid to be non partisan if it fits a niche that’s required. In this spirit, others who have expertise in finance, etc should be appointed as well.
Carney appoints a close friend for the Senate. Outrageous cronyism.
I didn’t vote for the Conservatives!
I didn’t vote for Zionist LibCons!
What a disgusting bunch of grifting phonies.
End disability poverty in Canada!
Decades of usless thieves in office and now more than ever, zio-elite are starving citizens.
I don’t think people understand the Canadian system. We cannot for example abolish the senate without a constitutional amendment which would open up a can of worms and would yield no results.
Gladu is the type that you wonder how she got elected in the first place, or how she ties her shoes in the morning… She’s praising the watered-down version of what her own former party suggested, and called it leadership.. lol
Abolish the f*ckin senate! Bunch of high paid useless old tw*ts trying to stay relevant. Made up of double crossers and azzholes.
“Second sober thought’, my azz!
Rewards for Red Tories and other friends of the Liberals. Nothing changed here folks. Liberal patronage continues.
Senators DO NOT represent Provinces or specific geographic populations. They are a chamber of sober second thought. If you look at the US system where you have the House and Senate, NOTHING gets done, and hard decisions like social security are put off. If the US needs the debt ceiling increased, there is a crisis. If the government needs funding, there is a crisis. Budget by brinkmanship is not the way to govern any country.
These ” senators ” are nothing more then taxpayer funded thieves put in their by corrupt politicians , they serve no meaningful fuction yet cost taxpayers a fortune . Just more b.s. from a system that needs a complete overhaul to stop fleecing taxpayers . What a phucked up country .
“he is dropping the non-partisan criteria”
Pardon me? Every person Justin appointed was a former liberal at either the provincial, or federal level. What a farce that was.
Carney appointing a conservative MP to the senate is very non-partisan. I do hope Poilievre’s conservatives realize this extension of an olive branch in the spirit it was given.
We need to elect our representatives, not have party hacks be given high paying jobs as rewards.
How does this person represent the province like the senate is supposed to work.
Well obviously, you can’t maintain a facade of bipartisanship when you spent a decade creating rabid partisans through division and short-sightedness.
