Albertans will vote this October on whether to hold a future referendum on separation from Canada.

Poilievre says in an open letter Lloyd will work to listen to Albertans and address their concerns.
He says the party can’t pretend Albertans don’t have legitimate grievances, such as the cost of groceries and housing.

Poilievre says those “who have lost hope in Canada are not our enemies” and the party will win them back.
Lloyd has represented the Sturgeon River—Parkland riding in Alberta since 2017.

Some people think that Alberta Independence is something new. Starting in 1905 when Alberta joined Confederation there were people upset about the backroom deals made by the wealthy to exploit the west. Then Alberta had to fight for 30 years until 1935 before Canada gave ownership of Alberta’s resources to Alberta. Add on the horrible National Energy Program of the 1980s, then Trudeau junior doing everything he could to shut down Alberta’s oil industry while importing foreign oil to eastern Canada. I can go on but you get the point.

Rick. I agree there are pros and cons to both sides. There is a cost to stay in Canada also. Imagine how even better Alberta would be doing if the Liberals didn’t try to shut down the industry the past 10 years. There is a cost either way.
Canadians, also, should not demonize Albertans that want to leave Canada. Case in point “Canada United” post that immediately badmouths Albertans that might choose independence for a valid reason.

If you’re thinking about an independent Alberta, it’s important to understand what’s actually at stake. This isn’t just about slogans, frustration with Ottawa, or symbolic ideas of sovereignty. Independence means rebuilding almost every major system we rely on today because those systems exist under federal law, not provincial authority.
On Day 1 of independence, Alberta would lose the Canadian Constitution, the Criminal Code, federal courts, federal policing, federal tax law, federal benefits, and federal regulatory bodies. None of these continue automatically. They all have to be recreated from scratch — and that takes years, not months.
People talk like we’d “just change a few laws.” In reality, Alberta would need:
• A new constitution
• A full criminal code
• A complete tax system
• New courts and appeals structures
• Border, customs, and immigration laws
• Pension, disability, and senior benefit programs
• Banking, securities, and financial regulatory systems
• Possibly a central bank and a new currency
These aren’t political preferences — they’re the basic machinery of a functioning country. Alberta does not currently have these systems.
Asking people to vote without these fundamentals in place isn’t offering a real choice. It’s asking them to take a leap of faith.
And the hidden costs are enormous
The symbolic parts of independence are easy to imagine. The hard parts — the accounting systems, tax infrastructure, regulatory bodies, and financial standards — are expensive, disruptive, and unavoidable.
Alberta currently relies on federal accounting standards, federal enforcement, and the CRA’s entire infrastructure. A new country would need its own tax agency, audit regulators, accounting rules, and enforcement systems. That means billions of dollars and years of transition.
Every business would have to overhaul payroll, tax filings, GST/VAT replacements, import/export rules, and financial reporting. None of this is optional.
And if the currency changes — CAD, USD, or an Alberta dollar — the complexity multiplies dramatically.
Seniors would face the greatest risk
There are no guaranteed plans for:
• Old Age Security
• CPP pensions already earned
• GIS, disability supports, survivor benefits
Seniors spent decades paying into these programs. They deserve certainty, not assumptions.
The fiscal plan being promoted isn’t a real financial plan
The “Fully Costed Fiscal Plan for an Independent Alberta” isn’t an audited budget, isn’t prepared under public sector accounting standards, and isn’t based on verified financial data. It relies on perfect oil prices, perfect negotiations, and optimistic projections.
That’s not planning — that’s gambling.
Albertans deserve clarity before being asked to decide
Independence isn’t a policy tweak. It’s a full state building project with massive risks and generational consequences. Before any referendum, Albertans should have:
• A constitution
• A legal framework
• A tax system
• A pension plan
• A currency plan
• A regulatory structure
• A real, audited financial model
• A detailed transition roadmap
Without these, we’re not making an informed choice — we’re rolling the dice on Alberta’s future.
