The fire quickly spread to the nearby wooden trestle, which was about 50-feet tall and over 600 feet long.
The fire was large enough to send large clouds of smoke billowing across Sherwood, and by 6:00 p.m. the trestle had become engulfed.
The trestle, owned by the Portland and Western railroad, was treated with chemicals firefighters believe caused it to burn spectacularly and emit thick clouds of black smoke. A short time later, the trestle collapsed.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze, but by Tuesday morning more than 50 firefighters had contained the fire.
