PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – A jury examining the suicide of an inmate at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary is urging the government to remove cables or cords in inmate areas. Andy Allan Brassard was found hanging from a television with coaxial cable on Nov. 16, 2012.
The 26-year-old was serving a three-year, six-month sentence for aggravated assault of his wife.

The inquest this week heard testimony about how Brassard had been suicidal before he was sent to jail in August 2012.

The jury also recommended more frequent check-ins with inmates known to be suicidal and that all vacant mental health worker positions be filled as soon as possible.
It also recommended staff receive mandatory training for suicide awareness prior to beginning their work at the prison.
