The use of force by Calgary police officers is under investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) after an alleged break and enter left a suspect with “serious injuries.”
Police said at about 1:10 a.m. on June 11, a 45-year-old man was seen breaking into a business on 17 Avenue S.W. Police said officers entered the business, which was closed at the time, and found the man armed with a crowbar and sledgehammer.

Officers then took him into custody.
“The man complained of injuries and was taken to hospital where he was briefly admitted and treated,” ASIRT said in a release. “He has subsequently been released from hospital and remains in pretrial custody.”
ASIRT will focus on the “circumstances surrounding the conduct of the officers while engaged with the man.” The team will not offer further comment until the investigation is closed.
