Four seeking mayor’s seat in City of Kawartha Lakes as council will be reduced by half

Mayor Andy Letham will face three other candidates in hopes of holding onto the top seat in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Letham will seek a second term on council after winning in a landslide in the 2014 election.

He’ll be facing two current city councillors — Gord James of Ward 12 and Brian Junkin of Ward 7 — along with Peter Weygang.

The deadline to run for council was Friday, which saw recently retired Kawartha Lakes Police Service Chief John Hagarty announce his intentions to run in Ward 5.

City council will be smaller after the October municipal election as there will only be eight members — dropping from 16 after council in March 2017 voted 15-2 to reduce the size of city council and change the ward boundaries.

The 2018 municipal elections are being held over 10 days, from Friday, Oct. 12 at 9 a.m., to Monday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m.

Kawartha Lakes electors should receive a voting kit in the mail in the end of September or early October.
