City catches Neville Park coyote

City of Toronto officials have successfully captured a coyote living in Neville Park in the Beach.

The animal will not be euthanized despite previous plans to do so. Instead, it will be moved to zoo or wildlife rehabiliation centre.

Toronto Public Health had said Friday that it planned to capture and kill the coyote. But then Beach residents began a petition, to save the animal’s life, supported by local city councillor Sandra Bussin.

Residents had complained this winter after the coyote killed a small dog. There were also reports that two other dogs may have been attacked.

City staff tried for three weeks to force the coyote to leave the area by removing food from nearby properties, making noise and even using paintball guns but nothing worked.

Starting Friday, the city set out box traps on private property which it said would "humanely catch the coyote."
